Monthly Technical Meetings

May/June Socials

We hope that you can make it out to the SGS night at the Zephyrs on May 14th and to the Northshore Social on June 3rd at the Columbia St. Tap Room, Covington.

May Monthly Technical Luncheon

From Eric Zimmermann:
Due to a scheduling conflict we are going to have to cancel the meeting for the upcoming week.  We are going to try to re-scheule Dr. Lorenzo for the fall.
I regret that we were not able to announce at the meeting, that as a society we are supporting the efforts of Dr. Lorenzo and fellow geoscientists at LSU and UNO with a $5,000 commitment towards the research efforts of the sustainability and integrity of our New Orleans area levee system.
Furthermore, I regret that I won't have a chance to thank everyone in person for the tremendous opportunity to lead the SGS for the past year, it has been a wonderful experience.
Finally, if you have pre-paid for this meeting, please contact Jared Bosch who will re-imburse you for your payment.
Once again, I am sorry to have to do this, but I feel that this is best for the society at this time.
Thanks,
Eric

SEG Spring Distinguished Lecturer

We want to thank everybody for coming and supporting this event at such short notice. We apologize for any inconvenience in the number of rescheduled attempts to put this event on.

Golf Tournament

The 2010 SGS Golf Tournament was held this year at Tchefuncta Country Club Thursday March 18th, the day after St. Patrick's and the Central Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 213. Each year we get to enjoy beautiful weather, camaraderie, a crawfish boil and, as always, good times whilst raising funds to support a worthy cause. This year was no exception as George Rhodes and Tim Maciejewski's photos will attest. The funds raised are then allocated by the Scholarship Committee to High School and University Students and awarded at our final luncheon of the year in May.

A big thank you as always to all our sponsors.

The 350 or so pictures George Rhoads and Tim Maciejewski took at this year’s SGS Golf Tournament (they were the guys you kept hitting the balls towards) are posted at the following photo sharing websites:
2010 SGS Golf Tournament - George and 2010 SGS Golf Tournament - Tim.
For George's pictures: If you want to download a picture at the original resolution, double click on the picture. This will display it in a 640x480 “Medium” resolution, then look at the bottom of the page where you will see “Other sizes: Medium Original”. Click on Original and the picture will be display on your screen in the full original resolution. Then you can right click on the picture and select “Save Picture As…” to download to your hard drive. If you double click on the large picture on your screen it will take you back to the thumbnail sized pictures.
For Tim's pictures: Once you found an image you are interested in, click the “All Sizes” button in the menu above the image.   This will open the large size.  If you want the original size of the picture for the most detail, select the “Original” option.   This will open the full sized image, from here just select download option, or right click and select Save As.   Please feel free to leave comments within Flickr if you are a member.  There are four pages of images to look through.

    Super Science Saturday

Super Science Saturday was March 20th. This event is always popular and teaches children that “science is fun” and the “oil industry is a neat place to work when they get older”. Click here for the event flyer and a call for volunteers to make this event happen. There were two shifts of 2 hours each, 11-1 and 1-3. They are always hands on and easy to learn and there were some new display stations this year. In the future if you have any additional hands on oil industry related thing that the children would appreciate please contact either Tom Bergeon by e-mail or by phone at (504) 832-3772 or our own Lisa Dwyer Kennedy.

    Symposium 2009

The SGS hosted a technical symposium November 10, 2009 focusing on the areas of the United States OCS that may be open to exploration in the near future. Offshore drilling was a hot topic in the 2008 presidential election, and it promises to be a hot-button issue in the years going forward. Many assumptions and statements have been made about the impact of such drilling, and as a society we felt we could provide a forum to discuss many of these issues.

If you have ideas for another topic that would be beneficial to the membership to address at a future Symposium contact Toby Roesler or Eric Zimmermann.
